One of the main things is knowing how to predict where the action will occur, timing, knowing your sport and understanding of shutter speeds and their influence on the moving subject.
There are a few things that apply in most action photography, it was important for me to search through a variety of source to help me learn the simple rules, to help me improve and eventually become as good as the pros.

Taking a look at motorbikes as I did for my golfing project I collected a variety of images from biking magazines and websites... This helped to fuel ideas for action shots as well as sequences of bike images to relate to a documentary style.
